Counseling supports the development of the whole child by advocating for academic, social/emotional, career and postsecondary needs and strives to develop life-long learners and productive citizens.

The counseling program in Adams 12 Five Star Schools works collaboratively with parents, community members and educators to empower every child, regardless of individual differences or obstacles, to ensure all students are prepared for meaningful, productive learning through a data-driven comprehensive K-12 school counseling program.

Counselors strive to support all Shadow Ridge students in personal/social, academic, and career/post-secondary growth so that all those who learn at Shadow Ridge will leave with the supports, friends, and individual skills they need to be successful in high school and in post-secondary life.

School Counseling Services:

Small Group Counseling: Groups are offered at various times throughout the year. Students will be given permission slips to be taken home and signed by parents to be involved in small group counseling. Group topics include, but are not limited to: Friendship, Grief and Loss, Anger Management, Divorce, and Study Skills.

Responsive Services:  For children who are struggling with school, family or their social life, the counseling office is a safe place to go. We are able to meet students on a short term basis in order to help them work through problems so that they can be successful in the classroom.

Classroom Guidance: Utilizing the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model, we strive for a preventative approach to school-wide counseling. Because of this, we develop, and often teach, lessons in classrooms or in whole school settings. Lessons are based around the needs of the school and reference the ASCA standards. Topics may include bullying, positive school climate, advocacy, conflict resolution, college and career readiness, study skills, learning styles and various strategies for success.

Confidentiality: Counselors respect the privacy of each student and do not release information without a student’s permission. There are exceptions to this privacy and we are obligated to immediately notify the appropriate persons should a student disclose harm to self, harm to another or abuse.
