Chromebooks

What is a Chromebook?

Chromebooks are portable computing devices that run the Google Chrome operating system.  Chromebooks connect to the internet using a built in wireless connection, and allow students to do online research and connect to the many online learning applications used at Shadow Ridge.

Chromebooks as learning tools:

There are many online learning applications available for students.  These applications allow students to learn at their own pace, and can provide individualized instruction for each student by focusing on what they need and not on what they already know.  Additionally students use Google Apps for Education to create documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows and to communicate and collaborate with other students and staff members.

How can you purchase a Chromebook for your child through the Adams 12 School District?

Adams 12 has arranged an Employee and Student Chromebook Purchasing Program.  This program allows Adams 12 students (or families) and staff to purchase for personal use the same Samsung Chromebooks that the District utilizes for teaching, learning, and assessment, with the same discount that is received by the District.

These are the same devices that Shadow Ridge uses in many classrooms throughout the school on a daily basis.  Families that choose to purchase these devices for their students, will be allowed to have their students bring these devices to school for use in classroom instruction.

Why would I want to purchase a Chromebook for my child to use?

Chromebooks are rapidly becoming a valuable learning tool in education.  Shadow Ridge Middle School, with the help of the school district, has purchased over 600 Chromebooks for use at school in the last 3 years.  Even with this large number of devices, we don't have enough to provide for every student.  Our ultimate goal is to provide a one-to-one learning environment where each student has a device they can use throughout the school day in each of their classes.

Benefits of owning your device:
Owning your own Chromebook Using a Chromebook that the school owns
  •  Student can take the device home at night to work on homework, research, etc.
  •  Students must leave school owned Chromebooks at school.
  •  Student becomes very familiar and comfortable using their device on a regular basis.
  •  Student uses devices occasionally at school.
  •  Students using their own device don't risk spreading germs from devices that other students are using.
  •  Students share devices that may transmit germs from a sick student to another student using the same device.
  •  Students learn to be responsible for caring for their device - ensuring it is charged each night and ready for enhancing their learning each school day.
  •  Students have a Chromebook assigned to them in class and must return it at the end of class.
